I know that snacking does not necessarily prevent weight loss, but what is a reasonable calorie level for a snack when trying to lose weight?By Karen Collins, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., American Institute for Cancer Research
Q: I know that snacking does not necessarily prevent weight loss, but what is a reasonable calorie level for a snack when trying to lose weight?
A: Whether or not you’re in the midst of weight reduction efforts, snacks can add important nutrients and keep you from getting so hungry that when you do eat, you quickly eat more than you need. On the other hand, we sometimes forget how the calories in a series of snacks through the day can add up.
The best calorie level for a snack depends on total daily calorie needs (which differ with activity level, age and body size). Another consideration is whether you prefer to eat “normal” size meals with a small snack or two in between to tide you over, or whether you prefer something more like six mini-meals. For something light, 100 to 120 calories allows for a substantial piece of fruit or a quarter-cup of dried fruit or a cup of vegetable soup, for example. Adult women aiming for about 1600 calories per day to lose weight could have two snacks of about 200 calories each (a handful of nuts, an apple with peanut butter, or six ounces of yogurt, for example) and still leave room for moderate 400-calorie meals.
For people who are larger or more active and losing weight on 1800 or 2000 calories a day, snacks might reasonably be 250 to 300 calories each depending on meal sizes and how many snacks you will include daily. These could then include options like a cup of cereal with....to continue click here Share this post :
Learn the potentially lifesaving difference between heartburn and heart attack. From MayoClinic.com
You've just eaten a big meal and feel a burning sensation in your chest. Heartburn, right? Probably, but there's a chance the chest pain is a warning sign of a heart attack.
Learning to tell the difference between heartburn and something more serious may be a matter of life and death. Here's what you need to know. What is heartburn?
Heartburn isn't a disease. It's a symptom. Usually it occurs after eating or while lying down or bending over. You'll notice a burning sensation in your chest that may start in your upper abdomen and radiate all the way to your neck. Heartburn can be brief or continue for a few hours. Sometimes, stomach acid that backs up into the esophagus can leave a sour taste in your mouth — especially when you're lying down.
Normally, digestive acid in your stomach is kept from backing up into your esophagus by the lower esophageal sphincter. This ring of muscle functions as a valve, which opens only as you swallow. But sometimes the valve relaxes or weakens, allowing stomach acid to flow back into your....to continue click here Share this post :
You’ve heard it before: regular exercise—nothing more strenuous than a brisk half-hour walk most days of the week—offers potent protection against heart disease. But if that bit of information hasn’t motivated you to move more, perhaps the promise of living to be a robust 100 will. New research shows that exercise:
1. Buys you time. Data from the Framingham Heart Study, a 40-year study of 5,209 people, suggest that people walking 30 minutes a day for five days a week (or an equivalent amount of other exercise) add about a year and a half to their lives. Those who push themselves a little harder—running instead of walking, for example—add three and a half years on average.
2. Keeps you sharp. A slew of studies suggest that regular physical activity can help maintain memory and other aspects of brainpower. A 2007 study out of Texas Tech University showed that exercise boosts a key neurochemical that allows brain cells to communicate. At Oregon Health & Science University, researchers studying a group of people in their late eighties found that those who remained active were two to five times more likely to avoid memory loss and other cognitive deficits.
3. Preserves agility. Findings from the Rush Memory and Aging Project at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center recently showed that exercise puts the brakes on the decline in motor function associated with age. That may be one reason, along with maintaining....to continue click here Share this post :
Add years to your life with these foods for healthy aging.
Can you add years to your life by making smarter food choices?
Yes! There are many variables involved in how long you live, but by following a healthy lifestyle, staying active and eating a nutrient-packed diet, you can help slow the aging process and perhaps even stave off age-related diseases, including osteoporosis, diabetes and heart disease.
Start right now by including more of these 7 antioxidant-rich foods to your diet. We’ve included interesting facts and delicious EatingWell recipes for healthy aging. Here’s to your good health!
When I was in high school and college, I got a summer job as a lifeguard. All those hours in the sun gave me what I thought then was a beautiful, bronzy tan.
Today I realize the sun exposure just accelerated my skin’s aging process. Truth be told, I did wear sunscreen, but not always as much as a dermatologist would recommend.
Turns out, the vast majority of UV light that I was soaking up was UVA. UVA is a major contributor to premature skin aging (think: fine lines and wrinkles) because it penetrates deeper than UVB light and damages skin cells before there’s any visible sunburn.
Even worse, collagen—the fibrous protein that keeps skin firm, youthful-looking and wrinkle-free—begins to decline starting in your twenties!
Now that I’m older and wiser—and not anxious to look the part—I’m wearing more sunscreen to protect my skin from the outside in. And because I’m a registered dietitian and nutrition editor, I’ve seen the science that shows eating more of these foods will protect my skin from the inside out.
Keep your skin looking younger—for the rest of your life—with these 4 foods:
Strawberries: Eating more vitamin C-rich foods, such as strawberries, may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness, suggests research from 2007 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C’s skin-smoothing effects may be due to its ability to mop up free radicals produced from ultraviolet rays and also its role in collagen synthesis. (Vitamin C is essential for collagen production.) You can find vitamin C in a multitude of cosmetics—of which some have been shown to be effective in protecting skin—but why not go straight to the source for a tasty boost of C: red bell peppers, papaya, broccoli and oranges are other excellent sources.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes get their red hue from lycopene, a carotenoid that may help to keep your skin smooth. In a study published in 2008 in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, researchers found that of the 20 individuals studied, those who had higher skin concentrations of lycopene had smoother skin. Boost your lycopene intake with fresh summer produce like watermelon and carrots too.
Tofu: Tofu and other soyfoods, such as edamame and soymilk, may help to preserve skin-firming collagen because they are rich in isoflavones. In a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, mice fed isoflavones and exposed to ultraviolet radiation had fewer wrinkles and smoother skin than mice that were exposed to UV light but didn’t get isoflavones. The researchers believe that isoflavones help prevent collagen breakdown.
Tuna: Eating tuna—and other omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, sardines and trout—may help keep your skin looking youthful thanks to the omega-3....to continue click here Share this post :
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 500,000 centenarians in the world, and almost 100,000 in the United States. And the population is rapidly growing. The agency projects by 2050 there will be 1.1 million centenarians in America alone. Meanwhile, researchers at Boston University predict there will be even more, estimating some 3 million baby boomers will live to be 100 or older.
This begs the question: How can you live healthfully into your 100s? Experts say having good genes is half the battle, but lifestyle clearly contributes too. ForbesWoman asked current 100-year-olds to share their secrets for healthy living. Medical professionals insist that beginning these practices early can easily add decades to your lifetime--though it's never too late to start.
You Are What You Eat Daisy McFadden, a longtime resident of the Bronx, N.Y., will celebrate her 100th birthday this November. Still active and alert, she believes her eating habits have greatly contributed to her longevity. For years she's eaten a breakfast of oatmeal, cranberry juice and a banana. For lunch she usually has a salad with beets, cucumbers, tomatoes and either chicken or fish. Dinner is a plate of steamed vegetables and lean meat. Fresh fruit often follows for dessert....to continue click hereShare this post :
Last year I learned that my personal and financial growth are outside my comfort zone that is why I exerted extra effort and time to attend CA2020’s events and finish the Wealth Course. The goal then was to finish it in one month.
It was difficult for me considering that I’m a call center agent at that time and that my shift was from 12mn to 9am. That means I slept for only 4 hours and wake up to rush my way to the venue before 3pm for the Wealth Course.
I had headache every time I push myself to wake up, it was so uncomfortable but that’s the price I need to pay for my growth.
That continued to happen until I became part of the Core Team. It was then that NuSkin/Pharmanex was introduced to me as the Stage 1 of the Power Investing Plan. The idea that I have a team, a mentor, a business plus a company to help me healthy and wealthy made me happier to become part of the core team.
I love Pharmanex in particular Cortitrol because it helps me in stressful situation especially at work and in my productivity in CA2020.
Aside from the hectic schedules of service in Wealth Course and Cashflow Games, building pipelines/networking, running my business at day and working at night. I was able to manage my health and well being.
Even if I didn’t have enough sleep I have no more headaches waking up, in fact I felt like I had a full 8 hour sleep. I am relaxed every time I take it and it also smells good I really love it!
Let me share to you the other reasons why I love Cortitrol:
·Helps promote healthy Cortisol levels
·Contains TheaPure™, an all-natural theanine extract made from green tea leaves. It supports your ability to respond to situations more calmly.
·Helps you stay calm and relaxed
·Enhance feelings of wellbeing and control in response to stressful situations
·Improve performance and increased vigor throughout the day
Do you know how to meet the needs of your skin? Determining and meeting your skin's essential needs with a comprehensive skin care regimen is critical to maintaining skin's healthy function and beautiful appearance. While there are several ways to determine your skin's essential needs, the key to optimal skin health and beauty is to meet your skin's basic needs with a comprehensive skin care system. You can maintain beautiful skin and slow the rate at which it ages with a regimen that both supplements and protects the structure and function of the skin.
Basic Needs Although the skin has 10 essential needs to maintain optimal form, meeting the basic, daily needs with four regimen steps creates the foundation of daily skin care. The four essential steps are cleanse, tone, protect, and hydrate. A look at each step individually will help to clarify how it specifically addresses the essential needs of your skin.
Cleanse: This step meets the skin's basic need to be free of excess oil, dirt, and pollutants. If these impurities are not removed, you may experience dull, sallow skin; clogged, inflamed pores that can discolor and scar; or free radical oxidation that can damage cells, affect healthy cell renewal, irritate the skin, and initiate hyperpigmentation. To avoid these negative effects, cleansing should be performed twice daily.
Tone: Toning fulfills a basic daily need by preparing the skin to receive the benefits from other products and should be performed twice daily, after cleansing. Toning works in several ways. It calms and soothes the skin; toning also minimizes the appearance of pores and balances the skin's pH.
Protect: The protect step meets the skin's basic need for a morning moisturizer with SPF to guard against harmful UV rays and environmental stressors. Sun damage degrades the moisture barrier and structural proteins and promotes discoloration—all signs of premature skin aging.
Hydrate: The hydrate step provides vital lipids, replenishing moisture, and key repair components for optimal nighttime recovery. Nighttime hydration should be applied once daily in the evening....to continue click here
If you're like everybody else, you want healthy, great-looking skin—no matter what age you are. Skin that is clear, smooth, and radiant proclaims good health and lends tremendous confidence to how you feel about your appearance. By following some fundamental rules and by giving your skin everything it needs to function at its peak, you have the formula for younger, healthier, smoother skin at any age.
GREAT SKIN IN YOUR TWENTIES
In your twenties, you are probably enjoying some of the best skin of your life—moist, smooth, and supple skin. However, your skin cell renewal rate has already dropped, and dead cells aren't being shed quite as easily, leaving your skin dull. And the acne of your teenage years might still be hanging around.1
This is a great time to establish a beneficial skin care regimen that will keep your skin in great shape while protecting it against damage from the environment. Use a gentle cleanser that removes dirt and dead cells while moisturizing. Follow with a toner to add radiance and restore proper pH balance. Then apply a product to preserve youthful collagen and elastin in your skin. Finally, use a good moisturizer and SPF 15 sunscreen to guard against the sun's damaging rays.
If you're still struggling with acne, consider using a cleanser, toner, and lotion that have been specifically formulated to clear and calm irritated skin, manage oil levels, and protect against future breakouts.
GREAT SKIN IN YOUR THIRTIES
In your thirties, sunlight and environmental pollution will have begun to have noticeable effects on your skin's collagen. And with collagen production naturally dropping, you might be noticing some wrinkles and sagging as your skin doesn't bounce back quite as readily as it used to.1
Keep a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen as part of your daily regimen. To counter the damage being done by the environment, it's also important to get a balanced diet rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A, B, C and E. These and other powerful antioxidants protect your skin against free radical damage and help your skin repair itself, and stay healthy looking and moist. Finally, a product that contains polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) can help stimulate cell renewal and enhance your skin's radiance for a smooth, more youthful looking complexion.
You might also like to try a home microdermabrasion treatment. This kind of treatment can quickly and gently polish your skin while removing dull skin cells and toxins for a fresher, healthier looking appearance.
GREAT SKIN IN YOUR FORTIES
In your forties, your skin's sebum production slows down, meaning your skin is getting dryer. Plus, you are losing fat beneath your skin's outer layer, which means your skin is becoming more fragile. You are losing the elasticity that....to continue click here
No matter what your age, scheduling and making the most of regular physicals can save your life. When we were little, they were simple — a vaccination, and then off for ice cream with Mom. The older we get, the more complex they get.

There's nothing like an afternoon outside to lift the spirits. Unfortunately, too much time spent soaking up the sun's ultraviolet rays can be harmful to your skin, causing everything from premature aging to skin cancer. Here's how to protect the health and beauty of your skin while enjoying the outdoors.
Wardrobe wonders If you spend a lot of time in the sun — whether in the garden or at the beach — consider investing in sun-protective clothing. These special garments block more harmful ultraviolet rays than typical summer clothes, and many come labeled with a UPF rating (essentially SPF for fabric). Look for a UPF of 30 or higher. Also, make sure your sunglasses do more than just keep you from squinting — they should also be labeled for UV protection.
Create shade No trees in sight? Plan ahead and bring the shade with you on that next summer outing. An oversized beach umbrella does the trick for a day of swimming, while a portable canopy or tarp is perfect for a picnic. Another option is to find a parasol or wide-brimmed hat that matches your favorite outfit for shade on the go.
Sunscreen basics It's second nature for most people to slather on sunscreen, but you can maximize the benefits with careful purchasing and application. Your best bet is to choose a broad-spectrum (blocks both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or 30. Apply generously 20 to 30 minutes before you head outside, and reapply every few hours — especially after....to continue click hereShare this post :
When is the last time you had a day where you didn't forget something? Whether it's something small, such as an item on a grocery list, or something bigger, such as a name, we've all had times when our memory didn't come through in the clutch.
Don't worry; you're not alone. Memory is like a muscle — your everyday life will keep it working well enough, but unless you do targeted exercises designed to push it, you'll keep having those little memory lapses. So here are three easy exercises you can use to get more from your memory:
Short-term Solutions
Ever have short-term memory loss? Nothing is more frustrating than walking in a room, going in a store or driving somewhere, and then completely forgetting why you went there in the first place (or where you parked). Fortunately, the solution is easy.
Before you do any task, simply tell yourself what you are about to do, where you are, where you're going and any other details that describe the task. The trick is to say it out loud three or four times. By saying it, you actually hear and then reprocess the information. This tricks your brain into making the information more readily accessible to your short-term memory.
The Name Game
People can tell when you've forgotten their name. So you can use these two easy ways to improve your name-remembering skills. The first is to use the trick above — say the name out loud a few times. This is what many politicians do to remember all of the people they meet....to continue click here Share this post :
LONDON (Reuters) - People working 10 or 11 hours a day are more likely to suffer serious heart problems, including heart attacks, than those clocking off after seven hours, researchers said on Tuesday.
The finding, from an 11-year study of 6,000 British civil servants, does not provide definitive proof that long hours cause coronary heart disease but it does show a clear link, which experts said may be due to stress.
In all, there were 369 cases of death due to heart disease, non-fatal heart attacks and angina among the London-based study group -- and the risk of having an adverse event was 60 percent higher for those who worked three to four hours overtime.
Working an extra one to two hours beyond a normal seven-hour day was not associated with increased risk.
"It seems there might a threshold, so it is not so bad if you work another hour or so more than usual," said Dr Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London.
The higher incidence of heart problems among those working overtime was independent of a range of other risk factors including smoking, being overweight or having high cholesterol.
But Virtanen said it was possible the lifestyle of people working long hours deteriorated over time, for example as a result of poor diet or increased alcohol consumption.
More fundamentally, long hours may be associated with work-related stress, which interferes with metabolic processes, as well as "sickness presenteeism," whereby employees continue working when they are ill....to continue click here
You already know that you shouldn’t overeat, but do you know how to easily stop from crossing the overindulgence threshold? Here are 10 simple ways to turn common-sense rules you already know into daily food-moderation tricks. Try them on a daily basis and over time your efforts will add up to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle—not to mention a smaller waistline!
1. Drink first, then eat. Are you drinking eight glasses of water each day? You should be for proper hydration—and making sure your body isn’t confusing thirst for hunger. Before you reach for food to fill up an empty stomach, drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes. This practice can curb the amount of food you consume.
2. Order half in a doggy bag. When dining at a restaurant, ask the server to bring out a half-portion and box up the other half to go. This will help with portion control and you’ll have another meal to eat later!
3. Eat consciously. Avoid eating in front of the television or anything else that takes your focus off of what you’re eating at all costs. When you’re distracted, you’re more likely to continue consuming beyond a healthy, or hungry, stopping point. Instead, sit down at a table—not on a couch—and keep watch over how much you’re....to continue here Share this post :
I’ve long been an advocate of proper skin care and hygiene, but as the sun’s rays shine brighter each passing day, I find that I can’t go outdoors for long periods of time without a pair of shades, a bottle of water, and an extra shirt at my perusal — yes, I tend to perspire A LOT. So while getting darker has personally never been cause for concern, I am concerned about break-outs, skin cancer, and sun spots (oh, and also brown-outs and water shortages, but that’s another matter).
Here are the best ways to make sure skin keeps and looks cool, even while the weather isn’t:
Down more than eight glasses of water daily. As the temperature rises, the more we need to replenish our bodies with water. Ordinarily eight to 10 glasses of water is sufficient to keep ourselves hydrated, but this changes once the weather’s warmer. Drink when you feel thirsty, and carry a water bottle around to keep fainting spells at bay, and keep your skin dewy.
Pile on the SPF, even while you’re indoors. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 is fine when staying indoors, but SPF 30 and higher is advisable when you’re going under the sun. Even halogen lights can emit SPF rays and....to continue click here

Sunscreens are products that contain ingredients that either physically deflect UV rays away from the skin or chemically absorb UV rays. Physical sunscreens usually contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide in tiny particles that can deflect UV rays. For people with sensitive skin, physical sunscreens can be less irritating. Organic sunscreens contain chemicals (i.e., benzophenones, cinnamates) with molecules that absorb UV rays and convert the energy to heat, which protects the cells in the skin.
Sunscreens include a Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which describes the amount of protection a sunscreen provides from the UVB rays that cause sunburn. For example, if you would normally burn in the sun in 10 minutes, a sunscreen with SPF 15 allows you to be in the sun 15 times longer or, in other words, for 150 minutes without being burned. Most sunscreens are listed as SPF 15, SPF 30, or SPF 30+. Unfortunately, using SPF 30 or SPF 30+ does not necessarily double your protection from using an SPF 15. Some studies show that SPF can lead people to stay in the sun longer with a false sense of security, forgetting that UVA rays may also be damaging their skin. In addition, people often neglect to apply enough sunscreen to have adequate protection.
Because skin care experts have an increased understanding of the dangers of UVA rays, a new abbreviated term can appear on sunscreen labels to indicate a product's protection against UVA. The PA system consists of three grades: PA+ can protect sensitive skin against low to medium UV radiation, PA++ offers better protection from UVA that can be used by people with normal skin exposed to medium UV radiation, and PA+++—the strongest grade of UVA protection now available—is designed for normal skin under very strong or direct UV radiation.
Sunscreen Ingredients
Many entities involved in health research (the FDA, American Medical Association, American Academy of Dermatology, and the American Cancer Society) strongly recommend the use of sunscreens to minimize the effects of UV radiation. The FDA regulates sunscreens and their active ingredients as over-the-counter drugs to ensure that they are safe and effective in protecting against UV radiation. The following are ingredients that Nu Skin uses in its products to protect your skin from UV rays:
* Zinc oxide (micronized): A broad spectrum physical sunscreen that effectively blocks both UVA and UVB rays while helping control excess oil and shine. Micronization of the zinc reduces the white film usually associated with physical sunblocks. * Parsol® 1789: A chemical ingredient that offers....to continue click here

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is a major contributing factor to skin aging. Whether through natural sunshine or artificial tanning beds, research shows that exposure to UV light has a cumulative effect that can increase wrinkles, compromise the immune system, and increase your risk for cancer. Nu Skin, with a desire to help you look, feel, and live better, wants you to understand the harmful effects of daily UV exposure and how you can protect yourself.
Understanding the Sun's Rays The sun emits a broad spectrum of electromagnetc energy, including x-rays, gamma rays, infrared rays, cosmic rays, radio waves, ultraviolet light, and visible light. These waves irradiate toward the earth. Most are filtered out by the earth's atmosphere, including the most powerful ultraviolet wavelength, known as UVC. UVA and UVB, the other two UV wavelengths, do permeate the atmosphere and cause skin aging and skin cancer.
In recent years, research has demonstrated the important differences between UVA and UVB. UVB rays are shorter, more powerful rays that affect the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and are responsible for the sunburns we feel when our skin is unprotected. UVB rays tend to be more intense at higher altitudes and during summer months. Research shows repeated exposure to UVB rays can affect the immune system and lead to basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.
UVA rays, though longer than and not as powerful as UVB rays, are believed to penetrate more deeply into the skin, causing damage to collagen and cells that are in the dermis. Although some people might believe that tanning beds are a safer method of tanning, UVA rays are more prevalent and stronger in tanning beds than in natural sunlight. UVA rays cause skin tanning, age spots, and wrinkling of the skin, as well as contribute to the development of skin cancer.
Although direct sun exposure can cause irreparable damage, your skin is also exposed to UVA and UVB rays at home and at work on a daily basis. UVA rays can actually pass through windows in your home and cars. Both UVA and UVB rays can reflect off of sand, water, and pavement, exposing you to UV radiation even in the shade. In addition, some indoor office lightbulbs emit UVA and UVB rays, though at much lower levels than sunlight. The effects of such chronic exposure can be minimized with makeup and moisturizers that contain sunscreens.
UV Rays and Your Skin
The skin, while extremely effective at protecting the body from disease and invaders, is delicate enough to be damaged by the accumulation of daily UV exposure that we receive over a lifetime. When we are exposed to UVA and UVB radiation, whether from the sun or elsewhere, the body's defense mechanism attempts to protect the skin by triggering the production of pigment. Melanocytes, which are in the lower level of the skin, produce a pigment called melanin. Melanin granules collect together in little packages as melanosomes, which then migrate to the skin's surface as skin cells go through their natural process of sloughing off. This visible tan is....to continue click here

Beautiful skin is a product of the skin you were born with and how you care for that skin as you age. Just as the rest of your body has changing needs as it grows, your skin also needs to develop and maintain a healthy structure as it evolves over time. The good news is that because we have been able to develop so many scientifically based approaches to improving skin health, there are a lot of choices available to treat all kinds of problems. Unfortunately, because there are so many choices, it can sometimes be confusing. In this article, I'll provide a guide of where to start—and where to go—if you have needs beyond the basic level.
Basic Skin Care Steps Several essential needs of the skin should be met on a regular basis. All skin types need to cleanse, hydrate, and protect every day. Adding a toner can also help prepare the skin to receive the benefits from other products.
The cleanse step helps remove dirt and oil, improving skin's appearance and preparing skin for the application of other products.
The hydrate step provides vital lipids, replenishing moisture, and key repair components for optimal nighttime recovery.
The protect step meets the skin's basic need for a morning moisturizer with SPF to guard against harmful UV rays and environmental stressors. Sun damage degrades the moisture barrier...to continue click hereShare this post :
"Every day, you make decisions that will profoundly affect the future of your skin," states leading skin care expert Dr. Jeannette Graf. Simply put, she says, you can take control of how you age.
Skin aging occurs naturally as you get older. This genetic process, known as "intrinsic aging," involves loss of skin thickness and elasticity, the deepening of facial expression lines, and the development of fine wrinkles. Many factors such as ultraviolet rays, cigarette smoke, repeated facial movements, and unhealthy foods also contribute to the signs of aging and poor skin health.
Combining the right treatment regimen, habits, and diet will do wonders for your skin's health. Dr. Graf says your skin needs nutrients, hydration, protection, and good habits to achieve that smooth, radiant feel.
1. THE RIGHT TREATMENT REGIMEN
Your skin takes a beating from the sun and pollutants. Pollution can cause damage, but Dr. Graf calls the sun "public enemy number one" of your skin. Ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate your skin and destroy collagen, elasticity, and pigmentation, leaving lines, wrinkles, freckles, and sagging skin.
To protect your skin from the environment, look for a good skin treatment regimen that consists of regular exfoliation, hydration, irritation reduction, and antioxidants (Latona, Valerie. "4 Steps to Healthier Skin." Shape, Sept. 2002, p. 56). Good moisturizers help your skin absorb water and provide sunscreen protection. For acne and blemishes, products containing salicylic or alphalipoic acid can work wonders. Aloe and chamomile soothe the skin. Antioxidants like those found in vitamin C, vitamin E, green tea, and grapeseed extract provide great protection against free radicals
2. THE RIGHT HABITS
Your skin suffers from mechanical aging even when you're not in the sun. Dr. Graf recommends changing some basic habits. Try not to squint, don't drink through straws, and keep your hands away from your face. Stay conscious of how often you frown, furrow your brow, or purse your lips. These repeated movements wear out the skin and cause lines and wrinkles. With a bit of effort you can....to continue click hereShare this post :
There's an old saying: "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself." In many ways, happiness is no different. You have the power to make yourself happy. Try these seven simple ways to enhance the quality of your life — starting now!
Why Does Happiness Matter?
Beyond the obvious — it feels good to be happy — having a positive attitude actually has health benefits. According to a Yale University survey, being optimistic in middle age increases life span by at least 7.5 years, even after accounting for age, gender, socioeconomic status and physical health. And the benefits don't stop there — happiness also may spur on your success! In a study published in "Psychological Bulletin" of more than 275,000 people, researchers found that happy people are generally successful in work, relationships and health.
Seven Ways to Make Yourself Happy 1. Socialize. Make an effort to connect with your friends on a regular basis. According to Teresa Seeman, Ph.D., a professor of medicine and epidemiology at UCLA, people who socialize at least once a week are more likely to live longer, have decreased risks of heart attacks, and lower their blood pressure and cortisol levels. In other words, they feel better! Talking on the phone is good and personal contact is even better, so pick up the phone and make a lunch date for next week with a good friend. 2. Practice gratitude. Gratitude breeds joy. According to a study at the University of California, Davis, people who make a list of things they're thankful for feel more optimistic about the week ahead and are generally more satisfied with their lives. Try recording happy events and things you're grateful for once a week. "It's hard to be bitter and mad when you're feeling grateful," says Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., author of "The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want." Want to feel happy? Give thanks.
3. Get moving. Physical activity releases endorphins that can boost your mood. It doesn't take a marathon or even more time on the treadmill to feel happier. According to researchers at Northern Arizona University, just 10 minutes of aerobic activity improves your mood. Let your inner child out to play. Try popping in an upbeat CD and dancing around the room, taking a quick walk to the store or hitting a tennis ball against the garage; then watch your spirits rise.
4. Spend money on other people. Want to feel happier? Skip the purchase for yourself and buy something for someone else. In a study of 632 Americans who were asked to rate their general happiness, spending money on other people or charities made them feel better than splurging on themselves. According to one of the researchers, the happiest people were the biggest givers, no matter what they earned. "Regardless of how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not," said researcher Elizabeth Dunn, Ph.D., of the psychology department at Canada's University of British Columbia. So pick up a gift for someone or make a donation.
5. Appreciate the small stuff. A sunny day, lunch with a friend … practice appreciating the little things and you'll find yourself happier in general. According to Lyubomirsky, there is a correlation between....to continue click hereShare this post :
Today, do something to improve your health. These five healthy habits are easy to accomplish and can help boost your health in a big way.
Floss.
Flossing between your teeth removes plaque. Floss between and around all of your teeth at least once a day. In addition to brushing with a toothpaste such as Crest®, try a soft floss, such as Glide® Deep Clean Floss. It's made with patented, shred-resistant fiber, so you spend less time fumbling and more time flossing.
Walk a mile.
A brisk 15-minute walk will burn about 75 calories (for a person weighing 150 pounds), but it's also a quick stress reliever. If you can't get outside, try climbing stairs. Take a few minutes to get your heart pumping to give you a boost of energy so you'll feel refreshed when you get on with your day. Please consult your physician before beginning an exercise program.
Apply sunscreen.
It only takes a minute to make sure your skin is well protected from the sun's harmful rays. It's a good idea to use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, use a higher SPF and be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Stretch.
You can benefit from stretching whether you're planning on exercising or not. Spending 10 minutes stretching can increase flexibility, improve circulation, enhance coordination, improve posture and relieve stress.
Make a salad.
Did you know we're supposed to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day? In just a few minutes of chopping and tossing, you can up your daily intake with a healthy mix of greens, brightly colored veggies....to continue click hereShare this post :
Today more than ever, your age is a state of mind. Throw a little curve into your routine. Try our six fun ideas to uncork the fountain of youth and jazz up your outlook today.
1. Try a fresh way to stretch.
Author Anita Boser recommends gentle exercises called undulations to relieve stiffness brought on by lack of movement. “These exercises create a fluid exchange in the joints so tissues can get the nutrients they need to remain limber as we age,” Boser said. Try the Easy Sway:
* Sitting in a firm chair (not a sofa), lean to the right so that the left side opens in an arc and the right side curves in. * Then lean to the left so the right side opens up. * Sway from side to side for a minute and notice what parts of your spine can do this movement easily and what parts of your spine are stiff. * Stop and then start again, but let one of the stiff places initiate the movement. It will be different; perhaps smaller, uncoordinated or less smooth. That's OK. Just don't do anything that hurts. Let the stiff place lead for a minute. * Stop and start once again a few times. Just a few minutes of gentle movement will lubricate and nourish the joints in your spine, so they are healthier.
2. Take a veggie break.
“We’re undergoing a quiet revolution in our understanding of aging,” author Sally Brown said. Aging, once thought to be inevitable, is now considered to be a buildup of faults in the body caused by damage from unstable molecules called free radicals. When the body’s repair systems weaken, free-radical damage accumulates, leading to disease, reduction in skin elasticity, muscle and bone wastage and slower mental reactions. “Slowing aging down, right now, may be as easy as simply eating more vegetables,” said Brown. “They contain antioxidants, which bind with free radicals and make them harmless.” Do something for yourself. Take a veggie break and reap the rewards. Being proactive will help you feel refreshed and younger today.
3. Play some new music and dance.
When was the last time you kicked up your heels and spun around the room? Try turning on the radio to a random station or pulling something new to your digital music player. Then feel the rhythm and get stepping. Or try a dance video from the library and learn some new steps. 4. Lift some weights.
Don’t wait to join the gym. Grab those weights that are.... to continue click hereShare this post :
